Fenland SOIL is a not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to supporting sustainable, climate-smart farming and land use in the Fens; working at the intersection of science, policy, and practice to drive innovation and collaboration in one of the UK’s most important and challenging agricultural landscapes.
Our primary aim is to inform and co-develop whole-farm land use strategies that deliver climate change mitigation, biodiversity enhancement, and long-term agricultural resilience. We work closely with land managers and other stakeholders to ensure solutions are both scientifically robust and practically grounded.
A core area of our work is the development of standardised greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factors for different types of peat soils – deep, shallow, and wasted. These soils, which dominate the Fenland landscape, have significant implications for national emissions accounting and local land use decisions. By helping to establish a credible, agreed-upon set of numbers, we aim to support evidence-based policy, enable access to green finance, and unlock opportunities for farmers engaged in nature-based solutions.
Fenland SOIL also serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, field trials, and the integration of new technologies that support sustainable land management. Through workshops, applied research, and collaborative partnerships, we are building a regional network committed to securing a productive, low-emissions future for the Fens.
